It’s that time of year again when the kids will be out of school for an entire week and “soooo bored” if plans aren’t underway. We have just the thing to help.

We’ve compiled a list of family friendly spring break ideas that won’t break the bank and can be done right in your hometown (or local if you’ve moved haha). Some of these places listed may be in another state, but you’re guaranteed to be able to search similar locations nearby that may be a slam dunk for your family. The idea is to be able to entertain the family, create lots of memories, and avoid breaking the bank.

Segway Tours of Houston (Houston, TX)

Looking for some unique sight-seeing fun? Segway tours of Houston offers a eco-friendly transporter with tours leading you through the waterway, Theatre District, tranquility park and even through some of Houston’s most historic areas like Discovery Green and the historic home district.
Segway tours are best for families with older teens as you must be 12 years and older to ride and at least 4 feet tall. There are some riding weight restrictions and attire that’s strongly encouraged.
Pricing starts $59.00 per person and includes 3 different tour options, 2 hours of riding thrills and has options for groups up to 8 people stopping at your places of interest along the trail of the tour selected.
I cannot stress enough how much this attraction is for a more mature audience, as you’ll be standing for long periods, operating a Segway machine by yourself, and are expected to navigate throughout Houston without the assistance of a driver operating your personal machine.
Family Movie Night Out – You Select Your Movie Theatre (Nationwide)

Movie nights are always a hit. You can relax, catch up on a newly released film and just enjoy to luxuries of laying back and kicking your feet up. Some of our favorite theatres to try have been AMC Theatres, Star Cinema Grill, and Cinemark Theatres as they each feature power reclining chairs, a full guest services and private screening options. Among the three, my absolute favorite has been Star Cinema Grill as they also have a full menu option beyond snacks to provide a dinner-at-the-movies experience. Nothing beats a 2-for-1 special so this mama can skip over thinking of dinner options after a fun night out.
The cool thing about movie dates is that on Tuesday’s there’s a fan favorite of $5 movie tickets for all showtimes before 6pm in most locations. Individual sales prices and availability will apply.
Some other great ideas include:
- Family Roller Skating
- Painting with a Twist (hold the twist for kids)
- Pottery Making Class
- Cooking Class
- New local dining experience
- Visiting the National Museum District
- Get tickets for a theatre play
- Billiards and Bowling Night Out
- Go for ice cream and make a fun game out of it
- Get tickets to a local sporting event
I wanted to be sure to exclude major theme parks and travel plans as those experiences are known to accrue cost as you include travel, packing, preparing for the trip with beauty appointments, not to mention paying for entertainment while there. We found it more appealing to share local ideas with places that can be used as an example, whether in your area or not. Please share with a friend if you found this list to be helpful.
